For 60 years, Camp Hendon has been a lifeline for children with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) and their families, creating a supportive community. Many campers feel isolated by their diagnosis, but here, they find peers just like them, fostering a sense of belonging and building confidence in managing their disease.
Our volunteer-led programs offer a safe, medically supervised, and fun recreational camping experience. Children learn vital self-management skills, while parents receive a desperately needed reprieve, enjoying a week free from constant monitoring and worry. This invaluable week is a positive step toward independence for both child and caregiver. Beyond traditional summer camp, Camp Hendon provides year-round support through Family and Teen Retreats, caregiver groups, and social events, ensuring continued connection. We believe every child deserves this life-changing experience, which is why approximately 40% attend on scholarship; no child is ever turned away for financial reasons. As a nonprofit, all funding comes from grants, donations, and fees, ensuring these crucial programs continue. With no immediate cure for T1D, Camp Hendon provides essential self-management skills and a supportive community, guaranteeing an experience that makes diabetes manageable and enhances overall well-being until that cure is found. |
